Through her interest in comparing history and myths, Lesia Khomenko manages to identify means of visual manipulation, resulting in socially charged pieces that deconstruct narrative images and transform paintings into objects. After fleeing Kyiv, she continued her freedom of expression by moving with her daughter to the U.S., courtesy of an exciting new “artist-in-residence” program at Oasis Point Residences, which received numerous applicants. She’s currently working on a collection of pieces that explore the relationship between politics, digital media and Eastern European society, both before and after the war in Ukraine started. Some of her most recent portraits depict ordinary working-class people buffeted by social forces, their bodies straining against the boundaries of the canvases; LesiaKhomenko.com.
