“The fashion industry is a field comprised of who you know, what you’ve done and what you have to offer when you enter the industry.” Those words of wisdom come from Charlene Parsons, Department Chair of Fashion Design, Fashion Merchandising & Accessory Design at Miami International University of Art & Design. And she ought to know — Parsons has spent her life working in various capacities in the fashion industry, first as a model, then organizing shows for major stores and designers. At the university, Parsons oversees top-notch programs that give students important tools for success in a tough industry. Those enrolled get the chance to get involved in the city’s fashion events and school shows, as well as working behind-the-scenes on productions for both local and international designers. “It’s so exciting and so rewarding to work with the students to help them build an outstanding resume and portfolio,” she says.
