It all started with a spare surfboard — one that Kelly Kingston listed for sale on Craigslist. “Instantly, I had 40 emails from local kids telling me why they should get the board,” she says. Kingston was so moved by the appeals, she bought more used boards to give away, and in the process created the Share The Stoke Foundation. The group now spearheads a number of initiatives that help put boards in the hands of needy kids both locally and in places as far as Costa Rica and Panama. Their goal is to keep kids off the streets and out of trouble by opening up a confidence-building and healthy alternative. “We’ve seen kids in poverty-stricken areas rise up and shine,” she says; ShareTheStokeFoundation.com.
