Q: Tell us about your role with Habitat for Humanity.
A: “I became involved with Habitat when my husband and I lived and pastored in Houston. When we moved to Key Biscayne in 1998, I volunteered assisting with the actual construction while recruiting friends to support the organization financially. In 2008, I was invited to come on to the Board of Directors. Today, I help recruit companies, interview candidates for homes and volunteer on the builds along with my husband and children.”
Q: What is the most fulfilling part of giving back?
A: “I love working on builds along with prospective home owners and seeing their excitement as their house goes up. Habitat communities change the lives of the homeowners by allowing them to actually purchase a home interest-free. This changes the attitude of their entire families as they see what possibilities are within their reach to pull themselves out of the poverty cycle and move ahead to self-sufficiency and a better life. Habitat communities also assist in changing the culture of the neighborhoods that are created by these responsible homeowners.”
Q: How can we help?
A: “Individuals and businesses can assist in sponsoring a home build or sending a group of volunteers for a day on a build. Construction and landscaping materials can be donated. Monetary donations drive the number of builds we can do yearly. Plots of land can be donated to the organization for a build. What gets the juices flowing is to visit a Habitat build, talk to a homeowner and see the difference we make in the lives of Miami-Dade residents!”
