In 1868, a 28-year-old American named Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhasen, Germany, on the banks of the Rhine with the goal of combining American manufacturing techniques with traditional watchmaking methods. More than 150 years later, the firm continues to delight the horological world with models such as this DaVinci Tourbillon. This elegant timepiece features three complications — a tourbillon, chronograph and retrograde date display — on a single dial, powered by an IWC-manufactured movement. The 18 kt gold round case housing the movement (which can be viewed via a clear sapphire rear case) has the chronograph pushers flanking the crown, while the flying tourbillon is placed just above the 6 o’clock position. The hacking minute tourbillon allows the timepiece to be set precisely to the second. At the 12 o’clock position, hour and minute counters are combined in a totalizer. The unique “flyback” date display automatically jumps back to the first after the last day of each month. A simple yet beautiful dark brown alligator band secures the watch in place; IWC.com.
