Balance pH Levels
Vaginal pH is a measure of the acidity of the below-the-belt ecosystem. In healthy women, pH is usually somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5. When your pH becomes unbalanced, odor-causing bacteria can flourish, causing odor and discomfort. Certain factors can spike your pH levels, like hormones, stress and periods. Luckily, certain foods containing probiotics can help keep the levels in check. Yogurt, cranberry and kefir can help you maintain an ideal balance.
No Scented Soaps
Your vagina can’t scream, but if it could, it would scold you every time you use a scented soap in the shower. Using fragrances, soaps and douches can irritate and cause some unnecessary pain and discomfort. Instead, try washing with water. Yes. Just water, that’s all you need. If you wish to cleanse the exterior with soap, make sure you use a subtle one without fragrance to avoid any burning sensations, but keep in mind that chemicals should NEVER be used internally.
Cotton Underwear
It might not seem important, but the fabric of your underwear plays a huge part in keeping you top-notch. It’s imperative to stay dry and clean throughout the day and the best way to ensure that is to wear cotton underwear because it’s breathable and will help keep moisture, heat and humidity away. These factors can contribute to growth in bacteria and can lead to infections and smells. Staying dry and loose is the way to go — whether you’re sitting on the couch all day or out being active.
Doctor Visits
It’s critical for women to visit their gynos on a yearly basis to allow the whole body to remain in healthy harmony. Visits to your doctor will include pap smears which can help detect cancerous cells, and your gyno can also check for less complicated issues such as STDs, infections, irregular periods and hormonal imbalances. All of these conditions can cause bigger discomfort and serious issues if left untreated, so treat each appointment like it’s the most important thing in the world.
