One of the greatest movie titles of all time is What Women Want. Ladies stood in line for tickets hoping for a film with an empowering message. Men, confused by the title, didn’t know what to think. Was the movie asking a question or preparing to divulge the secrets of women’s innermost thoughts? Ambiguous as it may have been, we know it was at least a commercial success.
A man may go through life dating women, who on the surface might appear like carbon copies of one another. On the other hand, a lady’s dance card may show a different picture that covers a wider spectrum, because their preferences change over the course of a lifetime. This makes it difficult to identify the variables that make men unanimously attractive and women undeniably desirable, but there are a few universal guidelines that can’t hurt your cause.
When Mark Twain wrote: “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society”…he’d never met a Kardashian. But as a rule rather than an exception, dressing like the job you want to have has its benefits. You don’t need ZZ Top to tell you how every woman feels about a sharp-dressed man, you can see it in their eyes. If you don’t believe me, see if you don’t sit a little straighter or speak more politely in the presence of a police officer or serviceman in uniform. Your appearance will attract its equivalent.
It was Scottish Pop Vocalist Paolo Nutini who sang: “I put some new shoes on and suddenly everything is right”…but a pair of Ferragamos or Manolos can only take you so far. If you don’t feel comfortable in your own skin, who’s going to feel comfortable around you? Be proud of what makes you unique and play to your strengths. Self-assurance is sexy and making it a part of your lifestyle will ensure that the right opportunity doesn’t pass you by.
On a similar tip, you could be wearing a $40,000 Brioni suit stitched with white gold thread or a $1 million dress, but show up to a sales call with unkempt hair and a surprise leftover from breakfast on your chin and you might as well say adios to the deal.
When it comes to complementing your style, you don’t need to eat 500 grams of whey protein or run more miles than you drive a day, but exercise is essential. If for no better reason than to reap the health benefits of a lower BMI, increase cardiovascular strength and boost your energy output, then at least to look better naked. Not sure where to start? A good way to get physically fit is to dance ‘till you drop. Ladies of The Middle Ages may have had full-blown measles, but at least they had fun at parties. The skill of dancing was once compulsory to the education of a gentleman, but has since fallen out of fashion. Dance is one of the many languages of love both sexes speak. Learn it and you’ll be communicating more frequently.
Sweat aside, smart is sexy…but don’t overdo it. Appearing to be overly intellectual is inherently anti-social, because nobody likes a know-it-all. Take 10 minutes a day to keep up with current events, know at least a couple of proven jokes and ask questions you want to know the answers to rather than relying on small talk.
In the end, it’s essential to remember that in all matters of love, kindness counts. Both men and women are said to be notoriously selfish (usually by the opposite sex), but self-serving pursuits can only offer temporary satisfaction. Ideally, you want to give your all to a significant other, which will guarantee reciprocation. Barring that, another way to accomplish this (especially for guys) is to stroll down a crowded street while walking a puppy, carrying a toddler and having your cute granny in tow.
When it comes down to it, there are many traits connected to a man or woman’s character before he or she can be considered handsome or beautiful. If you focus on only physical ones, you may only get an initial response with no foundation to improve upon. Recognize the traits you have working for you, build on them, and if there’s more within your grasp, strive to attain them by whatever means possible.
