Dating Dilemma
Q:Our 14-year-old daughter is starting to ask if she can invite boys over to the house. Although we know she’s too young to be dealing in serious relationships with the opposite sex, we’re trying to be supportive so she doesn’t resent us (or rebel) as her mother did at that age. Is there any advice you can give us to make this transition into the teen years smoother when it comes to boys, etc.?
A: I love the fact she is asking you. It sounds like you’re an involved parent who wants to know how to communicate with your teen; and it may not be easy at times. Both parents need to be on the same page. At 14, the high school years, it’s common for girls to like boys. They tend to have crushes, want to be noticed more and are looking to “go steady.” I always tell parents to have the parties and “getties” at their house verses someone else’s. Instead of inviting one person, the guy she likes, it would be best to invite several friends. Find learning moments with your teen. Talk about what’s appropriated, accepted and consequences that can occur when a relationship gets out of hand or falls apart. They may be stuck in an emotionally and verbally abusive relationship and not know how to get out. With that in mind, signs to observe are irritability, sensitivity, distraction, texting or increased computer use. I always give teens a few words of wisdom when they admit to liking a guy. Just be really, really, really good friends so that the break-up isn’t as hard.

Despite the fact that Miami has 79% more gyms and health clubs than the average city, Men’s Health deemed Miami the “Biggest Loser” in America when it comes to fitness and motivation levels. We came in dead last of the 50 metropolitan areas included.
Pretty Dumb
Travel & Leisure readers recently ranked Miami as having the most attractive people in America. We also came in as the 29th dumbest in the same poll out of the 30 U.S. cities included in the survey. One has to wonder if the voters confused tourists with locals.
Chill Out
Harris International just announced that according to their findings, Miami is the most laid-back city in America thanks to the ability of its residents to balance work and play. They did not take into account that many jobs in the city require RSVP’ing to a few parties a week.
