Affectionately known as MAC, the Mexican American Council is a non-profit organization that helps the children of Homestead’s migrant worker community connect with their roots by offering them the opportunity to enroll in an after-school Mariachi Academy. As public funds for art and music education programs dwindled, MAC competed with 75 applicants to secure over $50,000 which will go toward new instruments, ethnic costumes and dedicated instructors. Similar programs in at-risk communities help increase student confidence and reduce dropout rates. Many organizations have sent an increasing number of graduates on to college or vocational training; MexicanAmericanCouncil.org.
