Ride Smart

Golf carts are part of daily life on The Key, which is why many parents underestimate the risks of handing over the wheel. Children lack the judgment and knowledge of traffic rules needed to stay safe.

A loaded cart can weigh several hundred pounds, and even a low-speed impact can lead to serious injuries. Miami attorney Moncy Blanco-Herrera of RRBH Law stresses that when a minor is driving, the legal and financial consequences fall squarely on the adults. “Letting a child drive a golf cart is not a harmless rite of passage,” he says. “If an unlicensed minor causes a crash, parents can be held responsible for the injuries, property damage, and sometimes long-term financial consequences, especially when the cart is not properly insured.” Treat your golf cart like a motor vehicle, not a toy.
