Smiling Faces

The Shake-A-Leg Miami sailboats are a happy sight on the waters off Coconut Grove with their physically, developmentally and economically challenged children and adults at the helm.

It’s a sad fact that many disabled children are less likely to take part in traditional leisure activities and less likely to interact with peers except in school. Shake-A-Leg Miami takes full advantage of its beautiful location on Biscayne Bay to provide people with disabilities and their families a safe, encouraging environment in which they can “have fun, be inspired, develop friendships and launch dreams.” They have created a community where “kids are helping kids” with paddling, boat rides and land-based activities. They also regularly launch their world-famous specialized sailboats that allow the disabled to get out and enjoy a sport they otherwise would have no access to. They also have programs designed to help adults and opportunities for high school volunteers; ShakeALegMiami.org.
