At Art Cares For Kids, the children in the hospital and their families are the true heroes. “We are just there to provide a creative outlet and art materials to ease the pain for a short period of time,” says Founder Liz Portuondo. “We leave the hospital but they stay there for days or weeks undergoing intense physical and emotional challenges. In spite of this, I’ve witnessed a sense of community in the hospital between the parents and staff that is simply beautiful.” She believes we need to connect and increase our sense of compassion, now more than ever. “It doesn’t cost us anything to be kind to each other,” she says. “Stop searching for the right organization to be part of. Just help each other whenever the opportunity arises — a kind word, a smile or just opening the door for someone changes the energy.” Art Cares For Kids is a non-profit organization established in 2010 as the result of a shared vision of compassion amongst Portuondo and her friends Dorian Rosen, Tania Quintana and Viviana Brown; ArtCaresForKids.org.
