Wellness Apps

Today’s phone apps help us oversee our finances, our home and work projects, and they even tell us when it’s time to take the mini-van in for scheduled service. Why not have them also assist with your personal well-being? Here are a few options.

LIFE SAVER
One of the best things about smartphones is the ability to store encyclopedic books of information on the comparatively tiny devices. Pocket First Aid & CPR from the American Heart Association is such a title. The app structure makes it easy to find critical information and videos fast. A must for every phone; Heart.org.

GET WELL
It’s important to give your doctor as much comprehensive information about your illness, pain or chronic problem as possible. The Symple Symptom Journal lets you track 20 symptoms simultaneously, keep notes on other factors such as your diet, medications and exercise…and even lets you take photos. Doctor recommended; SympleApp.com.

EDIBLE APP
You don’t have to shop at the store to use the Whole Foods Market app. Inside are over 3,000 healthy recipes sorted by cuisine, course, diet and more. You can then make a handy shopping list or use the provided search option for ingredients already in your kitchen; WholeFoodsMarket.com.

CHOOSE HEALTH
Healthy eating today doesn’t have to be based around counting calories, but should be designed to maximize energy and well-being within a balanced and tailored lifestyle regimen for the individual. When cooking at home or eating at a restaurant, consider the use of raw foods rich in living enzymes, vitamins and sea minerals. A health-conscious menu should contain ingredients with little salt, no dairy and unprocessed honey in place of sweeteners. To cut down on fats, use organic olive oil instead of butter. The healthiest way of cooking any kind of fish is to steam it, rather than frying or grilling. Organic chicken and meat should always be chosen over the more manufactured options, especially in today’s mass-produced climate. Desserts can also be extremely healthy and are lower in calories than ever before. My favorite is organic carrot cake with vanilla yogurt sorbet, instead of ice cream. Always look for the freshest ingredients and don’t be afraid to ask where the food is sourced from when visiting any restaurant.
