From Arthur Ashe to Venus & Serena Williams, public courts have nurtured and built tennis champions. Yet tennis is often seen as an elitist country club pastime, while public courses often fade into obscurity. Looking to spur interest and make the sport more approachable, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) has decided to turn courts into Tennis Court Canvases in 5 cities — Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Cincinnati and New York. The artists have free reign to re-imagine what a tennis court can look like. In The Magic City, the USTA is working with noted artist collaborative KiiK Creative on two courts at the Norman & Jean Reach Park. Other artists taking up the challenge includeCharlie Edmiston, Justus Roe, Xylene Project and Sen2 Figueroa; USOpen.org.
