In 1785, 24-year-old Master Watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron began crafting timepieces in what is now the oldest watchmaking firm in continuous operation, even staying open as the French Revolution and two World Wars raged. Management remained in the family as Jean-Marc’s son and then grandson perfected their skills by crafting the world’s first horological complication movement as well as unique musical watches capable of playing several tunes. The company continues to embody the motto “Do better if possible, and that is always possible” as it produces timeless timepieces. The Vacheron-Constantin Fiftysix radiates practicality with easily-read hour, minute and second hands as well as a power reserve indicator on a muted blue dial bearing the firm’s iconic Maltese Cross symbol. This symbol is repeated on the crown of the winding stem, the stainless-steel locking mechanism of the handstitched calfskin band. The 40 mm stainless teel housing features a translucent crystal caseback allowing a view of the self-winding 27-jeweled movement in action which reveals yet another Maltese Cross, this one in the form of a 22k gold elevated oscillating weight. The Fiftysix is the epitome of understated elegance; Vacheron-Constantin.com.
