Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the most effective and advanced treatment for skin cancer today, with cure rates up to 99%. This procedure is a precise method of tumor removal in which the physician serves as surgeon, pathologist and reconstructive surgeon. The procedure was developed by Frederic Mohs, M.D., in the 1930s and has been refined throughout the years. It relies on surgically removing the cancer in stages, one tissue layer at a time, and examining the tissue with a microscope to trace and ensure removal of the skin cancer. Mohs Surgery is so unique and effective because of the way in which the surgically removed tissue is examined, evaluating 100% of the margins. The advantage of this type of surgery is that it ensures complete cancer removal, while minimizing the amount of healthy tissue loss.
